New law to help homeowners stay in their homes and avoid tax penalties and fees
Homeowners, who are struggling with delinquent taxes, can now stay in their homes and pay their back taxes without penalties and fees.
The plan, dubbed “Pay As You Stay,” allows low-income residents to pay their back taxes at zero interest over three years, or 10 percent of a home’s taxable value, whichever is less. Once enrolled, all interest, penalties and fees are eliminated. The measure takes effect this year.
“Everyone deserves a path to own a home,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who signed the plan into law Monday.
The plan focuses only on homeowners, who are living in their homes, and is related to the federal poverty level.
