Dearborn to start the school year online

The Dearborn Board of Education voted Monday to start the school year and evaluate later in October, as the spread of the COVID-19 continues.

The board reviewed three recommendations from a special committee, including online learning, a mixed plan, and in-person learning. The school year starts on Aug. 31, 2020.

Board members said that COVID-19 infection numbers continue to increase, presenting unsafe conditions for students and staff. “One death is too many,” said trustee Adel Mozip.

We salute the board’s decision because it is very difficult for young students to social distance and keep wearing their masks. Also, it would be costly for the district to start the year with in-person learning and later change its plan because of infections.
